The specialty of Back Mountain Auto Specialists is good customer service, something the business takes to the extra mile, according to owner Dave Spurlin Sr., of Shavertown. And what Spurlin enjoys most about running the business in the Back Mountain area is the customers.

“It’s the people, the friendliness, the patience, the understanding,” he said. “When a car breaks down, it’s a tough time. I always kid that it was a good day if no one yelled at me, but I don’t think anyone has yelled at me in 20 years.”

The business was voted Best Auto Repair Service in The Dallas Post’s Best of the Back Mountain awards in 2013. It has been a AAA provider since 1976, is AAA approved for auto repair and is a NAPA Auto Care Center.

Many of the shop’s technicians, all of whom are ASE certified, have worked there for several years. Wayne Sutton, of Lehman, head technician, began working there 17 years ago, and his son, James Sutton is in his fifth year of employment with the company.

Spurlin said the business is unique and attracts many returning customers because its number one goal is to not only make them happy, but give them the best service possible so they “feel they want to come back.”

“We call when the cars are finished,” he said, “pick up and deliver cars, offer rides during repairs for customers in the Back Mountain area, and we’ll never sell anyone something they don’t need.”

Spurlin’s son, Dave Jr., who also works at the shop, agreed, saying, “Most of what we focus on here is customer-based.” He added the business places a large emphasis on good communication with its patrons, and even sends postcards to remind them when state inspections are due.

Dave Jr. represents the fourth generation of auto repairmen in the Spurlin famil. The history of the family’s local business ventures dates back to 1973, when his grandfather, Bill Spurlin moved from the Washington D.C. area, opening a gas station in South Wilkes-Barre. Then, from 1976 to 1984, Bill owned Dallas Exxon on Memorial Highway, selling it to Dave Sr. in 1984. Prior to that, Dave Sr. managed his first gas station at age 18 immediately after high school.

The current business, located at 149 N. Main St., Shavertown, offers a variety of services, including brake work, air conditioning, inspections, regular maintenance, suspension, tires, towing, diagnostics, electrical work and more.

“We do things that can be done in a day,” said Dave Sr. “Get them in and get them out in the same day, by appointment.”
