Lake-Lehman junior Cayle Spencer was named co-Division 2 Player of the Year, highlighting the Back Mountain selections on the Wyoming Valley Conference girls basketball all-star teams, as selected by the conference coaches.
Alexis Lewis of division champion Holy Redeemer was the Division 2 Most Valuable Player while Spencer and Quieterriua Gross of Meyers shared the Player of the Year honors.
Spencer, who is already over 1,000 points for her career, averaged 21.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals for the regular season. She led the Black Knights to a 9-4 finish, tied for second in the five-team division, and a 15-7 overall record.
Senior Emily Sutton joined Spencer on the first team.
Dallas senior Katy Comitz was a first-team pick on the Division 1 team. Senior Maggie Michael was selected to the second team and senior Sam Missal made the third team.
The Mountaineers went 7-7 to finish fifth in the eight-team division. They were 10-12 overall.
Lake-Lehman junior Danae Sutliff was a second-team Division 2 pick.
COLLEGE BOUND
Senior guard Adam Dizbon became the first Lake-Lehman player in head coach Brian Cutter’s five-year tenure to commit to play college basketball.
Dizbon has decided to play on the NCAA Division III level at Susquehanna University where his 3.8-grade point average helped Dizbon land an academic scholarship.
“He seemed to really like Susquehanna,” Cutter said. “We go to camp there. He was very comfortable with their coach; their campus is beautiful and it’s a great academic school. I think he made a great choice.”
Susquehanna is currently third in the Landmark Conference behind The University of Scranton and Catholic University with a 7-6 record and is 15-9 overall.
Cutter said Dizbon, Lake-Lehman’s point guard and second-leading scorer, could play either guard spot on the college level.
“That’s one of the things they liked about him,” Cutter said. “He really can play both.”
MILESTONE
Lake-Lehman senior center Pete Borum reached the 1,000-rebound mark for his career late in the regular season in a game against Wyoming Seminary in what could be a first for the school.
Cutter was not aware of another Lake-Lehman player reaching that milestone.
“Pete missed half of his freshman year with an injury,” Cutter said. “He did it pretty much in 3 ½ years, so you have to average double-digit rebounds every game for that time.”
Borum, who averaged about 13 rebounds per game each of the past two seasons, got momentum going toward the milestone when he had three 20-rebound games early this season.
PLAYOFFS
Both Lake-Lehman and Dallas were in the District 2 Class AAA girls tournament, which had its start bumped back from Wednesday to Thursday because of weather complications.
Lake-Lehman landed the eighth seed in the 17-team event and a first-round home game. Dallas was seeded 11th and started on the road.
The teams would have needed wins both Thursday and Saturday to make it into the semifinal round, which is scheduled for Wednesday. The final and the game to determine the district’s third and final state qualifier, are scheduled for Saturday.
The Class AAA boys tournaments, in which both Lake-Lehman and Dallas were active with weekend quarterfinal games, continue with semifinals Tuesday and finals Friday.
The district’s top three teams make the state tournament from both events.
