Academy begins

The Music Box Playhouse is accepting applications for the Music Box Theatre Academy workshop. Sessions begin Sept. 10 for students ages 11 to 21. A staff under the leadership of Dana Feigenblatt will conduct sessions in acting, dance and voice. Students will audition for “Legally Blonde Jr.” to be performed Oct. 17, 18, and 19 at the Music Box Dinner Playhouse, 196 Hughes St., Swoyersville. Call 570 283-2195 for information and enrollment.

Civil War

Roundtable

The Wyoming Valley Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11 in the lower level of the Daddow-Isaacs American Legion, 730 Memorial Highway, Dallas.

The speaker for the evening will be J. David Petruzzi, of Brockway, who will present his program on “Cavalry in the Gettysburg Campaign.”

A $3 donation if requested of non-members.

Big Apple Jazz

The Back Mountain Chamber will presnt the 2014 Big Apple Jazz “a Tribute to Bobby Baird” from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Huntsville Golf Club, Dallas.

The evening will feature Vince Giordano & The Nighthawks, including a trip down memory lane performance with Bobby Baird.

Tickets are $75 per person and include first class New York jazz entertianment, assorted Big Apple appetizers, New York, food and dessert tables, beer, wine and soda throughout the evening.

Hoagie sale

Mountain Grange No. 567 will sell Italian hoagies from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at the Grange Hall, 1632 W. 8th St., Kingston Township. These hoagies consist of five types of Italian lunch meat, cheese, Romaine lettuce, and home-grown tomatoes (when available) and sell for $5 each.

Walk in sales are welcome, but if you wish to order a larger number of hoagies for your workplace, place an order on the answering machine at 570-696-4931.

Irem Auxiliary

plans luncheon

The Irem Women’s Auxiliary will host its last summer luncheon for this year from noon to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Irem Country Club pavilion, which is handicapped accessible with free parking. Cost is $18.

Menu consists of small salad, choice of roast beef or chicken francaise, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls/butter, vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup, coffee or tea.

Craft show

The Irem Shrine Ladies will sponsor an arts, crafts and collectibles show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21 at the Irem Country Club outdoor pavilion, Dallas.

Refreshments and baked goods will be available as will door pzies and a basket raffle.

A chicken and biscuit dinner will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the Northmoreland Twp. Volunteer Hall in Centermoreland. Ticket prices, eat-in or take-out, are $8 for adults and $4 for children under the age of 12.

The Back Mountain Bloomers Garden Club will host their fall luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the Irem Country Club, Dallas. Guest speaker will be Jerry Fritz, well-known author and garden designer from Ottsville.

The event is open to the public at a cost of $30.

The Economic Development Committee of the Back Mountain Chamber will present a breakfast event at 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at Penn State Wilkes-Barre.

The event will feature a presentation by Ardy Wurtzel, research associate of the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, who will provide national and regional information regarding the economy, inflation and the labor market.

All Day Bingo will be held on Sunday, Oct. 12 at the Northmoreland Twp. Volunteer Hall in Centermoreland. Doors open at noon and early birds start at 1:30 p.m. Dinner and refreshments will be provided to all players.
