Handcyclists competing in the Steamtown Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 12 will have a special escort, thanks to volunteers from Allied Services Heinz Rehabilitation Hospital. The team of 13 volunteers will cycle alongside and in front of handcycle athletes throughout the 26.2 mile race, ensuring their safety and the safety of other athletes on the course. The team includes volunteers with experience of the Steamtown Marathon and other wheelchair accessible races. Handcyclists can travel at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour during the course of the race. From left, kneeling are Mike Rawls, Ken Rex.
