Lipski’s strategy worked

Lake-Lehman field hockey coach Jean Lipski emphasizes her defensive unit keeping opposing penalty corners to a minimum.

The Lady Knights opened the district playoffs Tuesday with a near-perfect defensive effort after using a clutch offensive performance to pull out a league playoff game.

Lake-Lehman allowed just two shots and did not give up a penalty corner when it opened the District 2 Class AA field hockey tournament on its home field with a 3-0 quarterfinal win over Lackawanna Trail.

“We try to keep our defense really clean so we don’t give away corners,” Lipski said. “Corners are supposed to be your optimum opportunity.”

Lackawanna Trail did not get any of those opportunities.

Senior Emily Galasso and freshman Lynea Gregory led the defensive effort with help from Alysa Adams and Sara Sabaluski. Adams and Sabaluski each also spent time at midfield and contributed second-half assists.

Lake-Lehman earned the third seed and a first-round home game in the district playoffs by defeating Holy Redeemer, 4-3, in overtime Oct. 18 in a playoff for the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3 title at Wyoming Valley West.

Korri Wandel scored two goals, including one 3:40 into overtime when she ripped a shot and placed it just inside the post.

“She was so determined,” Lipski said. “She just wanted it so badly.

“It was a beautiful shot. There was no denying her.”

Kirstin Cope and Gregory also had goals in the division championship game. Katey Supey assisted both Wandel goals while Sara Sabaluski and Taylor Alba also had assists.

Tiff Malinowski made 13 saves.

Lake-Lehman opened the scoring against Lackawanna Trail when Lilli Stepanski tried centering the ball from along the endline and it went in off a Lady Lions defender. Kate Supey assisted the goal.

Miranda Moosic scored twice in the second half. Sabaluski dribbled in on the right side of the circle and sent a pass across the front of the cage right on to Moosic’s stick 2:18 into the second half. Adams drove the ball into the circle with 8:37 remaining and Moosic deflected it for the goal.
