The Lake-Lehman School Board approved the hiring of the following instructors as temporary professional employees: Katlyn McHenry of Myrtle Beach, SC, initial assignment Secondary Math Teacher at a salary of $46,128; Melanie Steele of Dallas, initial assignment Ross Elementary Teacher at salary of$44,287; Taylor Lawler of Harveys Lake, initial assignment Ross Elementary School at a salary of $42,731; and Kathryn Hassel of Shickshinny, initial assignment Ross Elementary Teacher at a salary of $ $46,720.

Courtney Novajosky, of Hunlock Creek, was appointed as Long-Term Elementary Substitute for the 2014-2015 school year at a salary of $42,731.00.

Two Lake-Lehman High School seniors, Elana Herceg and Hannah Cross, attended the 2014 Chemistry-Biochemistry Career Exploration Camp from June 29-July 2. Misericordia University annually hosts up to six Lake-Lehman students, entering their junior or senior year of high school, who wish to participate in a career exploration programs. The programs are available through the Lake-Lehman Foundation in partnership with Misericordia. There is no cost to students wishing to attend as the cost of the tuition is split between the foundation and Misericordia.

Bonnie Turchin, the foundation’s president, said the camp that Herceg and Cross chose gives them an insight into the fields of “forensic science, alternative energy programs, the pharmaceutical industry and other similar careers.”

Johnna Evans, past president and current member of the foundation, said many Lake-Lehman graduates, who are now Misercordia students, are volunteering with the camp.

“It is their way of giving back to their school” said Evans.

In other matters, the board …

Authorized the purchase and installation of concession stand equipment from Rice’s Food Equipment and Consulting of Dallas, PA, at a total cost of $25,460.

Awarded the bid for the Lake-Noxen Elementary School Paving/Resurfacing Project to Robert C. Young Inc., Mifflinville, at a cost of $52,400. All members were in favor of the motion, with the exception of board president Mark Kornowski, who voted against it, and Richard Bombick and Kevin Carey who were absent for the meeting.

The following changes to the 2014-2015 school calendar were approved: Friday, Aug. 29, Tuesday, Dec. 23 and Thursday, April 2 are now days of early dismissal. The days were originally scheduled as full days. Superintendent James McGovern said the adjustments were made because “all of the days precede vacations” when the school will be closed for a period of time.

The first day of the new school year will be Aug. 25. Back to school nights will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 15-18.

The next meeting of the Lake-Lehman school board will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 18.
