The Back Mountain Blackhawks defeat Crestwood to win the Casey Classic Championship on Dec. 30.
While the Crestwood Comets started the scoring in the 12th annual event, the Blackhawks finished it with a sudden death, bar down goal by Thomas Brady at 7:43 in overtime.
Blackhawks’ goalie Corey McAndrew stopped a 7-shot flourish with a diving paddle save on an open net bid to keep his team in the game. Eric Yenchak cleaeds the puck out of the zone where Brady picked it up for a classic breakaway.
After being outshot, 40-25, the Blackhawks only needed one shot in OT to win the championship game.
In the first period, Eric Smith answered Crestwood’s goal, only to have his team drop four goals to one bythe end of the second period.
Smith started the Back Mountain rally in the third with an assist from Alex Frear. Five minutes later, Brady scored on an assist from Smith. Within two minutes, Blackhawks’ Eric Smith scored from Logan Obes and Brady to tie the game with 7:53 left on the clock.
In a highly competitive championship game, the Blackhawks dropped Crestwood in its fourth consecutive championship bid. The Blackhawks last won the Casey Classic Championship in 2010.
