Shavertown United Methodist Church hosted its annual Vacation Bible School the week of July 20 with the theme “Workshop of Wonders” where participants were encouraged to “Gear Up With God.”
Families were invited to visit the church for a free cooked dinner prepared by Sandy Michalisin and her kitchen team each night at 5:30 p.m. and creative desserts prepared by Tina and Gary Navestad and Bev Bunney. The food was followed by a high-energy VBS program supported by video and technical support from Brad and Amy Wall.
Rebecca Oley and her crew of Visioneers led over 100 children and youth volunteers in music and dancing each evening as they introduced a new Bible verse and Wonder Words: Imagine With God, Build With God, Grow With God, Work With God and Walk With God. The message each night was reinforced by Bible stories told by Rev. Judy Walker. The energy carried over to games organized by Beth and Mike Viglone, crafts organized by Amy Kelly and Sheri Harvatine, the tween program run by Sherrie Waslick and Jenny Young and the preschool program run by Lori Kucewicz.
The mission project for this year’s VBS was Habitat for Humanity which was supported in two ways. The children brought in donations of bottled water, Gatorade, paper towels and paper plates to help feed Habitat volunteers. They also raised a total of $841.89 to be donated directly to Habitat for Humanity.
The VBS program was spearheaded this year by SUMC Christian Education Director Katie Hrivnak and was supported by numerous adult and teen volunteers. Members of the Shavertown UMC congregation also donated food, prepared decorations, provided traffic safety and helped to shepherd the participants from one program area to another. Their generosity contributed mightily to the success of the program.
All VBS participants and their families were welcomed to return for worship at 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays or at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays.
