Superintendent Lawrence Mahally reports the death of an inmate at the State Correctional Institution at Dallas.

Staff was conducting a security round on the housing unit when an officer observed inmate Guzman hanging in his cell at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 31. Staff immediately responded and provided life-saving measures until facility medical personnel arrived.

The inmate was pronounced dead by a prison physician.

In accordance with state policy, State Police were notified and will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Luzerne County Coroner’s Office.

Guzman was serving 6 to 12 years for Drug, Manufacture/sale or possession with intent to Deliver and Criminal Use of Communications Facility out of Lackawanna County. He was committed to the DOC on April 11, 2007, and had been at SCI Dallas since December 4, 2013.
