Local athletes compete in holiday tournaments

Ryan Monk of Dallas and Josh Sayre of Lake-Lehman each finished second Dec. 19-20 in the iWrestling.com X-calibur Tournament at Wilkes University’s Marts Center.

The inaugural event drew a competitive field of 20 teams from six states.

Lake-Lehman finished ninth in the team standings. Wyoming Seminary comfortably captured the title with 126 points. Lake-Lehman had 38 points and Dallas was 14th with 26.5 points.

Monk made it to the 285-pound final where he lost a 3-2 decision to Wyoming Seminary’s Mike Rogers.

Dallas freshman Jerry Ogurkis placed fifth at 220 pounds after pulling off the biggest win of the tournament’s opening day to advance into the semifinals.

Ogurkis was behind before rolling top-seeded Ryan Pinkham of Springfield Central on to his back and posting a pin with 14 seconds left in the first period of their second-round bout. Pinkham finished fourth in the state of Massachusetts last season.

“I knew nothing about him coming in,” Ogurkis told the Times Leader. “I just went out and wrestled my match and just did my best.

“I just go out there and wrestle. I don’t care who it is.”

Ogurkis lost two straight bouts on the second day before defeating Zach Gifford of Deposit/Hancock, N.Y., 10-2, in the bout to decide fifth and sixth places.

Sayre made it to the 145-pound finals where he lost, 14-6, to Stephen Glasgow from Bound Brook, N.J., the tournament’s second-place team.

Rodney Driscoll (126) and Derek Dragon (182) each placed fifth for the Black Knights.

Both teams are back in action in holiday tournaments. Dallas is at the Buckskin Classic at Conestoga Valley which started Saturday and concludes today.

Lake-Lehman is part of the large field of teams in the Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 29-30 Tunkhannock Kiwanis Tournament.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Dallas is playing in the Judy Knorr Holiday Tournament Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 29-30 at Berwick.

Dallas plays Emmaus in the opener and Berwick takes on Central Columbia in the other first-round game.

Lake-Lehman is part of the Pittston Holiday Tournament that will conclude Monday. The opening round matchups Friday had Lake-Lehman playing East Stroudsburg and Pittston Area playing Wyoming Area.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Lake-Lehman was part of the McGrane Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Wyoming Valley CYC in Wilkes-Barre.

Hanover Area, Holy Redeemer and Pittston Area were also in the field.
