AVOCA — Elizabeth “Betty” Jumper, 87, of Avoca, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2014, while residing at Wesley Village Nursing Home in Plains Township. She was the widow of husband, Albert D. Jumper Sr., who died in October 1972. She had family in Trucksville. A memorial service was held August 1 at Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea.

WILKES-BARRE — Mary R. Burns, formerly of Plymouth, passed away July 29, 2014, at the Little Flower Manor, Wilkes-Barre, with her family at her bedside. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mayor Edward F. Burns of Plymouth, in 1994. She had family in Dallas. Funeral services were held August 2 from the Williams-Hagen Funeral Home, 114 W. Main St., Plymouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial in All Saints Parish, 66 Willow St., Plymouth.

WILKES-BARRE — Mrs. Lois A. Yankosky, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away July 29, 2014, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, on July 8, 2012. She had family in Dallas. Funeral services was held August 4 from the Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, 21 N. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Hope Parish, Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.

JENKINS TWP. — Alvin H. Sands, former long-time resident of College Street, Nanticoke, passed away July 31, 2014, at Wesley Village, Jenkins Township. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Amelia Phillips. He had family in Dallas and Shavertown. Funeral services were August 4 from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with services in St. John’s Lutheran Church, 231 State St., Nanticoke.

DALLAS — Tessie Polachek, 90, of Dallas, passed away July 31, 2014, at the Meadows Nursing and Rehab Center, Dallas. She was married in 1942 to Michael L. Polachek, who passed away in 1982. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of family by the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main St., Shavertown.

COURTDALE — John M. Padavan, 87, of Courtdale, passed away on July 31, 2014, at Special Care Hospital in Nanticoke, surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Slutter on Aug. 31, 1992. He had family in Lehman. Funeral was August 4 from the Betz-Jastremski Funeral Home Inc., 568 Bennett St., Luzerne, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Family Parish, Luzerne.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Melissa Joye Karis Fox Zarlengo, 33, of West Palm Beach, passed into eternal life on July 30, 2014, at the home of her parents. She was a graduate of Dallas High School. Arrangements by Mamary-Durkin Funeral Service, 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre.

DALTON — Eleanor Story O’Brien, 88, of Dalton, died Aug. 1, 2014, at the Golden Living Center in Tunkhannock. Born in Tunkhannock, she was a daughter of the late Theodore and Mable Miner Story and she was the wife of the late Audley “Chip” O’Brien, who died in 1995. A graveside service will be held privately in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Tunkhannock. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Service Inc., 418 S. State St. Clarks Summit.

SWOYERSVILLE — Lorraine Milius Talerico, affectionately known as “Nannie,” 69, a resident of Swoyersville, passed away peacefully on Aug. 3, 2014, at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. She had family in Dallas. The funeral was conducted Aug. 8 from the Wroblewski Funeral Home Inc., 1442 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 116 Hughes St., Swoyersville.

ATKINSON, N.H. — Joan Leonard Schneider died July 31, 2014, in Atkinson, with her loving husband, Gene, by her side. Joan was the daughter of John and Dorothy (Cannon) Leonard of Wilkes-Barre; and graduated from St. Mary’s High School, class of 1960. She had family in Dallas. Funeral services will be conducted Aug. 9 at Brookside Chapel, Plaistow, New Hampshire.
