Kern Brothers Beer Distributor
A five-time winner in this category, Kern Brothers has been around the Back Mountain for more than 60 years. The distributor offers a wide selection of domestics, microbrews and imports. It will also take special orders if it doesn’t have a customer’s favorite beer in stock.
Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
For the seventh year, Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has won this category. The 130-bed, long-term care facility located on Lake Street in Dallas Township has been caring for its residents for over 30 years. It is owned and operated by Ecumenical Enterprises Inc. and offers 24-hour nursing care and rehabilitative therapy to those needing to improve or maintain their condition.
Cook’s Pharmacy in Shavertown has served the Back Mountain for more than 30 years and has always prided itself on its customer service and caring for the community. Owner Frank Lombardo said there is very little turnover on the staff and believes that is a reason the business has won the category four times.
Back Mountain Auto Specialists
Dave Spurlin has been in business at 149 N. Main St. in Shavertown since 1992, but has been serving vehicles in the Back Mountain since 1976 when he was associated with his father, Bill. Dave likes to advertise his business as “jobs that can be done in a day.”
UNIQUE GIFT SHOP
Located at 12 Main St. in Dallas, Embellish offers antiques, lamps, pillows, candles clocks and other home accessories which have helped it win this award. Business hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday though Saturday.
Harry and Sigmund Weis founded Weis Markets in 1912, opening their first store in Sunbury. Today, owners Robert Weis and grandson Jonathan and their employees pride themselves on “being good neighbors.” Not only are they committed to buying locally-grown produce, they support local food banks through their Fight Hunger program and are also committed to programs that favor the environment.
Humphreys’ Bootery and Bags
The business, owned by Jay Humphreys, is located in the Back Mountain Shopping Center. Some of its best-selling items include UGG boots, women’s handbags, gloves and jewelry. Humphreys says his business offers wonderful, friendly service because he and his staff enjoy taking care of their customers.
Joanna Siegel-Gover opened Buka in 2005 and the Back Mountain resident handpicks all the handbags, jewelry and clothing in her shop. Located at 120 N. Main St. in Shavertown, the store offers unique pieces you would expect to find in New York City. Buka has won the award multiple times.
Rave’s Landscaping and Discount Plant Center
Rave’s Landscaping will not only design, plan and put into action commercial and residential landscaping, it also provides plant health care and maintenance services to protect the customer’s investment. With over 13 acres of landscape-size trees and shrubs and plants, the center also provides a large variety of ornamental plants, hanging baskets and perennials.

Hilbert’s Equipment & Welding, Inc. has been voted best of Back Mountain Heavy Equipment Store once again this year. Co-owner Larry Hilbert, who, along with his son Larry “Sam,” runs the family buisness that started over 50 years ago, says the staff is always envisioning new products for its Back Mountain customers.

Owner Robert Nause was pleased to be chosen Best of Back Mountain for kitchen cabinetry. In business since 1990, Nause offers design services for not only kitchens, but also bathrooms, wet bars, offices and craft rooms. Kraftmaid and Dynasty Cabinets are two of his bigger lines. Along with installing cabinets, Top Value also sells and installs counter tops.
Bill Givens has been a meat cutter for 23 years and a manager of a meat department for 19 years. Givens has been at the Dallas location of Thomas’ Market for over five years, having previously worked in the Shavertown location for 11 years. .
Ye Olde Clock and Gift Shoppe
Ye Olde Clock and Gift Shoppe is a repeat winner in this category. The variety of antiques offered at the shop include clocks, watches, jewelry and pocket watches. Full service repairs are available.

Ochman’s Coins and Jewelry
Ochman’s is actually two stores in one. One side is a full-service jewelry store offering quality jewelry reflecting current fashion trends as well as traditional designs. The other side of Ochman’s buys and sells gold and silver coins and old U.S. currency. Owner Fran Ochman and her daughter, Maryann, give individual attention to their customers, while offering new as well as traditional jewelry designs.
Reclaiming the title of Best Pharmacy this year is Cook’s Pharmacy at 1909 Memorial Hwy. in Shavertown. Purchased in 1977 by Fred Lombardo, father of current owner Frank Lombardo, the store was once called Evans Drug Store, but the name was changed to Cook’s Pharmacy upon its purchase. One of only a few independent pharmacies remaining in Luzerne County, Cook’s is proud of its roots in the Back Mountain community.
Dave Angelella, co-owner of Country Scissors, is blessed to be honored as Best Hair Salon for three years in a row. Along with co-owner Erin Williams, Angelella offers full service to his customers and has been in business for 14 years.
The Nail Shop
The Nail Shop is located above Country Scissors on West Center Hill Road in Dallas and is owned by Carol Richards. Several nail technicians help Richards provide customers with beautiful manicures and pedicures.
Gino’s Shoe Store
The Ginocchetti family has been in the shoe business for over 70 years. From Frank Ginocchetti, who was a cobbler until the age of 93, all the way down the family tree, the family plans to keep the business running for generations to come. Sun Tan City, located at 41 Dallas Shopping Center, Route 309, is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
Steven’s Town and Country Dry Cleaners
Steve Lombardo, owner of Steven’s Town and Country Cleaners, says he and his staff work hard at providing good service for their customers. The business has been at its present location since May 1991, but Lombardo has been in the dry cleaning business since 1977. Lombardo says his business is professionally staffed, offers same day service as well as monthly and seasonal specials. Services also include UGG boot cleaning and wedding gown preservation.

Jack Williams tire Co. has been selling tires since 1929 and has grown to become one of the largest tire distributors in the nation. The company provides the largest selection of name brand tires, great service and the guaranteed lowest installed price. This is the fifth year Jack Williams Tire Co. has won in this category.
Located on Memorial Highway in Shavertown, Sheetz offers great Made-to-Order items. Sheetz is also a gas station where customers can order food from touch screens at the pump or in the store.
