HARVEYS LAKE – Luzerne County Chief Deputy Coroner William Lisman identified the woman killed on Lakeside Drive as Joan E. Batory.

Batory, 81, was struck by a vehicle as she was picking up mail and a newspaper in boxes along Lakeside Drive at about 9:30 a.m., Lisman said.

Lisman said it appeared the vehicle, driven by an elderly male, slid on ice and struck Batory. The driver, whose name wasn’t released, immediately stopped.

The impact caused Batory to go over a guiderail and down a steep embankment. She was recovered near the lake’s shore, Lisman said.

An accident reconstructionist with the state police is investigating.

Lakeside Drive, near Pole 166 and Pole 165, remains closed.

Batory was a resident of Harveys Lake for nearly 30 years, Lisman said.
