The Back Mountain Food Pantry Board of Directors recently held its annual meeting to review the events of 2007 which was the 30th anniversary of the founding of the pantry.

Sponsored by the Back Mountain Ministerium and organized in 1977, the pantry serves Dallas Borough, Dallas Township, Harveys Lake, Lake Township, Hunlock Creek, Jackson Township, Kingston Township, Lehman Township, Noxen and Sweet Valley.

The success of the food pantry, which is located at Trucksville United Methodist Church, is dependent upon the support from the churches of the Ministerium, the Dallas Area and Lake Lehman School Districts, foundations, businesses, civic and fraternal organizations, service clubs, social groups, the scouts and many individuals.

In 2007, 41 volunteers performed more than 2,000 hours of service at the pantry.

During the year, more than 22 tons of food were collected and distributed to area families.

Monetary donations have been critical to help with the purchase of food items that are not donated and to help fill the 165 requests for Thanksgiving baskets. Throughout the year, more than 600 households received food orders from the pantry.

The Board of Directors praised and thanked Louise Hazeltine for her many years of service to the food pantry in her capacity as the coordinator. It was her vision and energy which helped to expand the food pantry to what it is today.

Christine Swailes, Rev. Lori Steffensen, Lloyd Ryman and Andy Logue.
