The Meadows Nursing Center recently honored teen volunteers at a pizza party to thank them for donating 708 hours of service to residents during the summer. Local Junior Girl Scout troop 624 in cooperation with the Dallas Post Office is initiating, as a community service project, a mailbox revitalization program. The troop will be revitalizing mailboxes using innovative stenciling techniques using different colors and patterns. Participants include Carrie Cocolin, Katie Blanchard, Elizabeth Eby, Kelly Gill, Ashley Razawich, Loni Piekanski and Megan Riley.

30 years ago – 1985

Arts at Hayfield members are planning a Black Tie Ball for Nov. 9 in Hayfield House at Penn State Wilkes-Barre as a membership event for the new cultural organization. The dance will feature an 18-piece band from Penn State University in State College. Planners are Dr. Robert Merrill, Patricia Hinchey, Candyce Fike, Phyllis Belk, Joan Diana, Tobi Grossman, Jody Millard and Martha Hadsal.

Anthony and Lois Macri, new owners of the Overbrook Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge, Dallas, officially opened their new restaurant with a ribbon-cutting last Tuesday. More than 30 friends of the Macris attended the grand opening ceremonies.

The Dallas Area Marching Band was victorious in the 15th annual “Battle of the Bands” competition sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation held at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium. The band won first place honors in Group II competition as well as specialty trophies for music and band front. Mark Steinkirchner was selected as “Soloist of the Show.” Mark is a senior and plays trumpet.

40 years ago – 1975

The student body of Dallas Senior High School will elect this weekend’s Homecoming Queen, Friday, from one of these seven girls: Jan Taylor, Mary Sherman, Dana Ziegler, Holly Booth, Maureen Nolan, Katie Gray and Marti Spears. The queen will reign over the Homecoming Dance Saturday at the high school.

Five seniors at Dallas Senior High School have been named commended students in the merit program by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The following students received letters of commendation: Kevin D. Duermitt, Edward A. Farrar, Dennis J. Libenson, Dawn A. Morgan and Thomas L. Swingle.

50 years ago – 1965

Curtis Bynon, a Korean Veteran, of Fernbrook, will be installed as the new commander of Daddow Isaacs Post 672 of Dallas on Saturday evening at the Post Home, Memorial Highway. Mr. Bynon served 26 months in the service of his country, nineteen months of which he participated in Korea during this war.

St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Noxen, will hold its annual bazaar next Wednesday. A country style ham supper will be served. Flora Blizzard is Bazaar Chairman; Lena Dotter and Elsie May are cochairmen of the dinner. Other committee heads are: Decorations and Serving, Dorothy Case and Ethel Engleman; tickets, Faye Clark and Ethel Jones; fancy work, Hilda Oliver and Beulah Horlacker; fish pond and candy, Christine Blizzard; card booth, Cleona Fritz.

New officers of Parent-Teacher Guild of Gate of Heaven School were installed by outgoing president Bruno Marascio at the first meeting held in the school auditorium. They are: Andrew Lavix, president; Donald Fannon, first vice president; Mrs. Robert Crawford, second vice president; Mrs. Robert Lavelle, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Stanley Hozempa, recording secretary.

60 years ago – 1955

William Strauser, Trucksville linoleum dealer, was elected president of the Little League Baseball Association at a meeting in Back Mountain YMCA, Shavertown. Robert Parry, Dallas, manager of the Shavertown Acme market, was named vice president; Vern Pritchard, of Trucksville, with Woodlawn Dairy, treasurer; W. Paul Steinhauer, Galland-Steinhauer General Insurance Agency, secretary.

Mrs. James Lacy, Captain of the Dallas Borough Team of the Community Chest met recently with her workers at the Library Annex in Dallas. Women participating in the fund drive include Mrs. Patrick Reithoffer Jr., Mrs. Morris B. Harris, Mrs. William Wright, Mrs. Joseph Schneider, Mrs. James H. Jones, Mrs. Norti Berti, Mrs. Carlton Davies, Mrs. R.W. Brown, Mrs. Roswell S. Patterson, Mrs. J.P. DeWitt Jr., Mrs. Edwin L. Raub, Mrs. Louis J. Vitale, Mrs. Robert M. Bodycomb.

70 years ago – 1945

Plans for building a Legion Home in the Back Mountain area were discussed at a meeting of Daddow-Isaacs Post No. 672 Wednesday night in Back Mountain Memorial Library. The Post plans to erect a new building on a main thoroughfare. It will be complete with bowling alleys, recreation centers and lounge.

Mrs. Byron Creasy and Mrs. Howard Conrad, co-chairmen of the Dallas Woman’s Club Rummage Sale, which will be held at Main Street, Luzerne, later this month, have announced the following committee to assist them: Mrs. Nelson Thompson, Mrs. L.L. Richardson, Mrs. R.M. Bodycomb, Mrs. Vincent McGuire, Mrs. Harris Haycox, Mrs. J.M. Corliss, Mrs. A.N. Garinger, Mrs. Samuel Thompson, Mrs. Al Antanaitis, Mrs. Harry Harter and Mrs. Charles W. Lee.
