Daddow-Isaacs Dallas American Legion Post 672 is sponsoring their annual Essay Contest. This year’s topic is “Should the American Flag Be Protected From Desecration? Explain Your Rationale.”

Students in grades 9-12 in a public, parochial or private, or home schooled in the Back Mountain is eligible to participate. All essays must between 500 and 1,000 words. The specific rules for submitting an essay can be garnered at school or calling Clarence J. Michael, chairman, at 570-675-0488. The essay deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017.

Monies will be awarded on a local, district and state level. The Department of Pennsylvania First Place Winner will be awarded a $3,500 scholarship, a plaque and a trip to the American Legion Convention in July to read the winning essay to the assembled delegates.

The second place winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship and the third place winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship.

Since the inception of the Department of Pennsylvania state Essay Contest in 1935, the American Legion has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships. With the increasing costs of a college education this is an excellent way to earn some scholarship money. A national Oratorical Contest is also sponsored by Post 672.
