HARVEYS LAKE — A new council member was sworn in to serve in the borough at the Tuesday, Aug. 18 council meeting.

Bernie Castillo was appointed to replace Amy Williams, who recently resigned from council for personal reasons. Mayor Clarence Hogan swore him in.

Castillo, who previously served on council as chairman of the Finance Committee, will again serve on that committee with Daniel Blaine. Castillo is active with the Harveys Lake American Legion Post 0967.

An announcement was made that bid for two contracts on construction of the new police station were awarded at a special council meeting on Aug. 12 to Simplex Home of PA. Construction will begin as soon as all of the contract paperwork is processed.

Mike Rush, chairman of the Harveys Lake Recreation Committee, presented three plaques to council that were issued to the committee by U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, state Sen. Lisa Baker and state Rep. Karen Boback. The plaques will be hung in the borough office.

Council members thanked Rush for his dedication to the recreation committee, noting that the Harveys Lake Fest has grown under his leadership and has been successful.

Council members Bill Hilburt and Michell’e Boice attended a meeting of the Safety Committee at the Office of Sen. Baker, where they met with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials. Rep. Boback was also in attendance.

Ideas were presented on how to make Route 415, Lakeside Drive, safer for everyone who utilizes the lake. A follow-up meeting will take place in October on a date to be announced.

Michael Scavone, 50, of Harveys Lake, has been charged with vehicular homicide after he allegedly struck and killed Paula Jones, 31, of Factoryville, on June 7 while she was jogging around the lake.

Scavone’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 31.
