WILKES-BARRE — A van and a school bus transporting the Marywood University women’s soccer team collided with a van at the intersection of North Main and East Union streets Sunday morning, sending the van driver and one student to the hospital.
Marywood Coach Andrew Smith, who said he lives in Wilkes-Barre and wasn’t on the bus, said the team was heading to a scrimmage with several area schools at the Wilkes University field. The collision occurred around 9:30 a.m.
Most students declined transportation or treatment by responding EMS.
Police said the van apparently hit the bus broadside. The passenger-side fender and wheel area of the van were badly damaged. The back part of the bus drive shaft separated and hit the ground, skewing the rear tires out and complicating removal from the scene.
Smith later reported the student who went to the hospital had lost feeling in her legs, but it returned by the time she reached the hospital and X-rays came back negative. Several other players got checked out by the team trainer and a few opted to get X-rays as a precaution, but all were fine, Smith said.
The team did skip the scrimmage, and parents came to pick up most of the students.
