Memorial Day is right around the corner, with its hot dogs, hamburgers, picnics and parades. But for friends and residents of the Back Mountain, it’s also time to get excited about something else — the library’s annual auction!

The 70th Annual Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction will be held this year on July 7, 8, 9 and 10, but don’t forget the Annual Auction Kick-off Dinner and Mini Auction, to be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday, June 6 at the Appletree Terrace of Newberry Estates.

The evening begins with cocktails and hors d’oevres and a buffet-style dinner including grilling, pasta and dessert stations with assorted mini desserts, coffee and specialty teas. Following the dinner, a mini auction featuring auctioneer Steve Traver will be a great opportunity to sharpen bidding skills. Tickets are $26 per person and may be purchased at the library.

It seems that the auction increases in popularity every year with more bargains, more great finds and of course, more attendees. With this good news in mind, the library is currently preparing its list of auction volunteers. Anyone age 12 and older is encouraged to call the library to sign up for pre-auction set-up. This year’s set-up will begin Sunday, July 3 and continue Tuesday, July 5 and Wednesday July 6. Groups of individuals, including tweens needing service hours, are always welcome, as well as adults of any age. A free lunch is provided each day of the auction set-up.

The library is accepting donations for the auction including plants and seasonal decorations. Remember this when you’re gardening and looking to rearrange your overgrown perennials. Just place the extras in a small container and bring it to the library during regular hours.

Also, new at the auction this year, will be the Children’s Toy Tent. This child-friendly “Toys-Only Tent” will be operated by Boy Scout Troop 281 each night of the auction and will replace the previously held Saturday morning children’s auction. The library is now accepting donations of any new or gently-used toys, including dolls, board games and bicycles in good working condition.

The library will be closed Monday, May 30 in honor of Memorial Day. It will re-open at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 31 with regular hours.

Reminder to parents: Registration for Summer Story Hours begins Tuesday, June 7. Sessions are scheduled for ages 1 and 2 and ages 3 to 5. Call the library at 570-675-1182 to pre-register as spaces fill up quickly.

This year’s summer reading program, “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!” begins Thursday, June 9. Parents may stop by the library to begin their children’s reading logs, sign up for a reading group or register for a special Summer Reading Program. All ages are welcome to join.

Watch the library’s website (www.backmountainlibrary.org) and Facebook page for more information on all of the above events.
