DALLAS TWP. — Corey McAndrew held off Wyoming Area long enough for Cory Metz to put the Warriors away.

McAndrew made 14 saves and Metz scored three straight goals as Dallas fought off an upset bid to post a 7-3, home-field win in the District 2 boys lacrosse quarterfinals.

Dallas, which has played in all five championship games since District 2 began conducting boys lacrosse playoffs, had trouble early with Wyoming Area, which is in just its second season.

McAndrew made five of his saves while the Warriors were taking 10 straight shots during the first 5:38 of the second quarter.

The Warriors managed just one goal during that time to force a 2-2 tie.

“I knew they were going to come out big,” McAndrew said. “It’s a playoff game and they had a decent season for only their second season.”

It would have made the Warriors’ season to add a playoff upset after rising from one win a year ago to 5-5 in the Wyoming Valley Conference.

“We had our opportunities,” Wyoming Area coach Shaun Rohland said. “We had some shots on cage, but they didn’t go our way.

“You have to credit McAndrew. He’s a really good goalie.”

Dallas got out of trouble and gradually gained more possession and scoring chances. Other than the first half of the second quarter, the Mountaineers held a 33-13 lead in shots.

Then, they turned to a really good goal scorer.

Metz broke the tie with 54 seconds left in the second quarter faking a pass from straight on, 13 yards out, and firing in a low shot. After a scoreless third quarter, he scored 30 seconds into the fourth quarter by getting off a quick, hard shot after taking a Stone Mannello pass on the right wing.

“I think some of us calmed down,” Metz said. “It shouldn’t have taken us three quarters.

“We settled the ball, played some good defense and then we were actually catching the ball and throwing it.”

After Metz scored again while moving to his left, Connor Motley came out from behind the goal to add two more scores in a span of 2:14 to put the game away.

Justin Joseph ended more than 32 minutes without a score for Wyoming Area by connecting with 59 seconds left.

Jake Urban and Alex Hawk had scored in each of the first two quarters for Wyoming Area to force ties.

They answered scores by Mannello and Josh Kalna.

Dallas advances to play at top-seeded Delaware Valley, the unbeaten WVC champion, Monday, barring an upset by eighth-seeded North Pocono in the Warriors’ quarterfinal game Thursday.
