KINGSTON TWP. — Township gardeners now have more time to get their yard waste to the composting site with expanded hours, the township manager said at Wednesday’s supervisors’ meeting.
The Kingston Township Composting Site offers residents an environmentally friendly way to dispose of yard waste. But the facility’s hours conflicted with some residents’ work schedules as one man pointed out last month.
Township manager Kathleen Sebastian announced Wednesday the composting site on East Center Street in Shavertown, will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
“The (time) changes will be effective immediately,” she said.
In other news, supervisors agreed to sponsor a Luzerne County Office of Community Development grant application for The Lands at Hillside Farms for funding to install a crosswalk on Hillside Road in Shavertown.
Chet Mozloom, executive director of the nonprofit farm, was in the audience and happy to hear the news.
“I have been working on the crosswalk idea for at least eight years,” Mozloom said.
If the grant is awarded to The Lands at Hillside Farms, Mozloom plans to fund the project to establish a crosswalk, LED flashing lights and a crosswalk sign to create a safe and designated place for guests to cross Hillside Road in front of the farm’s main office building to reach the milking and nursery barns.
“It would be a mid-block crosswalk,” he said. “There are a couple (crosswalks) around like the one by the Luzerne County Courthouse in Wilkes-Barre.”
The next municipal meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 in the Kingston Township building.
