DALLAS TWP. — Chick-Fil-A Express will open in the Banks Student Life building at Misericordia University in Dallas Thursday, Nov. 10.

“Chick-Fil-A is the first national brand (restaurant) on campus,” said Rebecca Daley, the district manager at Metz Culinary Management Inc.

The university’s dining service provider, Metz Culinary Management Inc. of Dallas, signed a license agreement with the national chain to bring it to the Back Mountain, Daley said.

On Nov. 10, several festivities will be held to welcome the first national restaurant to campus.

Daley said a ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for 9:30 a.m. Also, to tie in the restaurant’s opening with Veterans Day, the company will donate 50 cents for every original chicken sandwich sold to the Wounded Warrior Project, a which is a service organization that connects injured veterans with programs and services.

Plus, The Lands at Hillside Farms in Shavertown will bring a cow to campus for a “Weigh the Cow” contest that requires participants to donate whatever change they have to guess the cow’s weight, Daley said. Proceeds raised will benefit Misericordia University’s Veterans Club.

“On Friday, (Nov. 11) all veterans will receive a free chicken sandwich,” Daley said noting a valid military identification card must be presented at the time of ordering.

The idea to bring a national brand restaurant to campus came from students, said Kit Foley, Vice President of Student Life.

Last spring, Foley went on a “listening tour” of the campus. She went into residence halls and asked the students what changes they want to see made to the growing university.

A frequent request was for a national brand restaurant, Foley said.

She took the feedback to Metz to see how the university could be responsive.

The result is Chick-Fil-A.

The eatery currently employs a staff of 20 comprised of college students, current and former staff of Metz Culinary Management, Daley said.

The menu consists of many fan-favorites such as waffle fries, nuggets, three salads, fried and grilled chicken sandwiches, a wrap, plus milkshakes and frosted lemonade.

Chick-Fil-A Express will be open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to midnight Friday; 4 p.m. to midnight Saturday; closed Sunday.

Misericordia students can use their flex dollars at Chick-Fil-A, but cash and credit are also accepted, Daley said.

Misericordia University also opened a “We Proudly Brew Starbucks,” in the Banks Student Center in September. The coffee shop is not a fully licensed Starbucks establishment but does sell the well-known coffee.
