DALLAS — The George M. Dalls Lodge No. 531 recently presented Peter Calkins with the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award.

The award was presented to Calkins by Donald Weaver, Acting District Deputy Grand Master of the 12th Masonic District, for his outstanding service to youth and Freemasonry, and a devoted Scout Leader of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council No. 501 and Dallas Troop 281 of the Boy Scouts of America. Calkins was nominated for the award by Barry Wagner, past master.

Back in 2007, Calkins coordinated a 10-day high adventure trip to Alaska. Calkins has also participated as a crew leader in two 10-day high adventure trips to Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico and has also attended the National Scout Jamboree for Scouting’s 100th anniversary in 2010 as a leader for participating Scouts. He is a regular participant in weekend hikes to teach Scouts skills in backpacking, camping, cooking and has also participated in Polar Bear camping with the Scouts, educating them on the necessities of winter camping.

Calkins and his wife, Heather, obtained and prepared a book of citations and congratulatory letters from presidents, state senators and representatives, branches of the military, religious institutions, American pioneers, surgeons and attorney generals, U.S. departments and many times a surprise greeting from a Scout’s sports or a veteran hero. They present the book of citations and congratulatory letters at the Scout’s Eagle Court of Honor after achieving the Eagle Rank.

Calkins is currently serving as Senior Warden of George M. Dallas Lodge No. 531 and will serve as Worshipful Master in 2016. He has been a devoted Scouting leader serving as a Den Leader for Cub Scout Pack 281 and currently serving as Scoutmaster for Troop 281 in Dallas.
