The Wyoming Valley could receive a visit from Old Man Winter this weekend.

According to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected this afternoon ahead of a slow-moving cold front. Some of the strong storms may produce gusty winds and small hail.

On Sunday and into Monday, a significant storm system will move up the east coast. The area could be on the edge of significant snow during that time. Those with travel plans are asked to check the forecasts periodically as the weekend progresses.

No watches or warnings have been issued for Luzerne or Lackawanna counties.

The forecast

The National Weather Service indicated that it was 39 degrees as of 6:54 a.m. at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, with fair skies reported.

Isolated showers are expected between 11 a.m. and noon today, followed by scattered showers and thunderstorms into the afternoon hours. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected, but higher amounts could fall in thunderstorms. Today’s high will be near 58.

Mostly cloudy skies are expected into tonight, along with scattered showers. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected, and tonight’s low will be around 37.

Mostly cloudy skies will wrap up the week on Friday, along with scattered showers before 5 p.m. The high will be near 47.

Partly cloudy skies will follow into Friday night, with a low around 24.

Mostly sunny skies are predicted for Saturday, with a high near 39. Partly cloudy skies will follow into Saturday night, with a low near 39.

Partly sunny skies will round out the weekend on Sunday, along with a 50 percent chance of snow. No precipitation amounts have been predicted, and the high will be near 39.
