WILKES-BARRE — A section of Interstate 81 will be restricted to single-lane traffic today so crews can perform emergency bridge repair.

Beginning at 9 a.m., Interstate 81 southbound just beyond Exit 165 (Business Route 309) will be restricted to single-lane traffic. PennDOT spokesman James May said in an email that a hole has opened up on the deck of a bridge.

The work is expected to continue until sometime this afternoon.

Major delays are expected in the area, and motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
