Sunshine is forecast for most of the week in the Wyoming Valley, but showers and thunderstorms are possible today and into tonight.

According to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service, thunderstorms are expected to develop today as a cold front approaches the area. A potential line of storms could sweep from west to east through the area from late morning through the afternoon.

Some of those storms could be severe and produce damaging winds and large hail. An isolated tornado will also be be possible.

No watches or warnings have been issued for Luzerne County.

The forecast

The National Weather Service indicated it was 69 degrees as of 6:54 a.m. at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, and fair skies were reported.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely today mainly between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Showers will then be likely, along with a possible thunderstorm, after 4 p.m. Some storms could be severe and produce damaging winds and large hail. Up to a quarter of an inch of total rainfall is possible, and winds could gust as high as 22 mph. The high will be near 86.

Mostly cloudy skies will carry over into tonight, along with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Up to a quarter of an inch of rain is possible, and the low will be around 66.

Mostly sunny skies are predicted for Tuesday, with a high near 81. Mostly clear skies will follow into Tuesday night, with a low around 56.
