20 YEARS AGO – 1997

Recently a poster contest was held at Dallas Middle School. The theme was “There’s a World Outside Dallas.” Every seventh grade student submitted a poster for their language class, and all eighth grade language students participated. Over 325 posters celebrated the value of countries and cultures outside the United States. Some of the participants were: Jennifer Polachek, Chris Nardi, Diane Werts, Carrie Schoonover, Theresa Kamarunas, Nicole Griglock, James Colarusso, Christian Stanislowski and Bryan Whalen.

Dr. Louis Maganzin, a professor at College Misericordia for more than 30 years has retired from his position at the college. A former resident of Dallas, he taught various courses in American history, including survey courses, junior and senior seminars and special courses in the American Revolution and the Cold War.

30 YEARS AGO – 1987

Rick Finnegan, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Finnegan, Loyalville, received a jacket recently in recognition of six years as a member of the Back Mountain Wrestling Club. Rick, 11, sixth grade student at Lake-Noxen Elementary School, started wrestling at the age of five when he weighed 36 pounds. He has attended district, regional qualifiers and A.A.U. championships every year since he has been in the club.

The Dallas Women of Kiwanis recently held their annual Christmas party and installation of officers at the Irem Temple Country Club. Ann Corbett, Past President, conducted the installation of new the following new officers. Mrs. Shirley Moore, President; Mrs. Peg Johnson, first Vice-President; Mrs. Claire Ward, second Vice-President; Mrs. Jean Grimes, Secretary; Mrs. Claudette Banks, Corresponding Secretary; and Mrs. Sybil Pelton, Treasurer.

40 YEAS AGO – 1977

Five students from Lake-Lehman High School have been selected to participate in the Northeast District 9 Chorus Festival to be held at Dallas High School this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They are: Wanda Harding, Scott Sherwood, Miralie Long, Renee Harabin and Jay Harris.

Members of the Lake Silkworth Volunteer Ambulance Association’s Ladies Auxiliary presented the ambulance unit with a cardio-miniscope heart monitor. Members of the auxiliary at the presentation were: Florence Swartz, Anita Wharton, Mary Simmont, Peggy Kulp, Nancy Weitz, Pat Romonoski, Jayne Gaydosh, Mary Davis and Judy Davis.

The Kunkle Silver Leaf Club met at the home of Mrs. Jennie Miers last Tuesday. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: president, Mrs. Edith Costanzo; vice-president, Mrs. Jennie Miers; secretary, Mrs. Naomi Ashburner, treasurer, Mrs. Elizabeth Hess; flowers and cards, Mrs. Grade Ide and Mrs. Myrtle Hess; publicity, Mrs. Ann Weaver.

50 YEARS AGO – 1967

It was cold on Tuesday when contingents from Dallas High School gathered to march in the Inaugural Parade in Harrisburg. Participants included the Junior High Drill team, the Color Guard of the Senior High Rifle Team and the Keyettes Drill team. Chaperoning the three busloads from the school were Robert Dolbear, William Baran, Mrs. Cora Hill, Bette Hanna, Mrs. Glenda Davis, George McCutcheon and Doris Mallin.

Donkey Ball, the world’s craziest sport, comes to Lake-Lehman High School Gym on Saturday. The ballgame, played from the backs of trained donkeys, is reputed to be wilder than a rodeo and funnier than a circus. In the game, the Lake-Lehman Lettermen’s Club will take on the Male Faculty of the school. The Lettermen announced its lineup as follows: Terry Jones, Bill Kanasky, Marty Cipolla, Bob Avery, Dave Spencer, Dave Klinzerman, Art Lamoreaux, Larry Shaw, Allen Fox, Bruce Anderson, Ray Dennis, Gerald Evans and many juniors and sophomores who are able to ride.

60 YEARS AGO – 1957

Final plans for “Cupid’s Ball” February 9 at Irem Temple Country Club were made by Mrs. Alva Eggleston’s committee, which met at the home of Mrs. Boyd White Tuesday evening. Reservations of this annual Dallas Woman’s Club affair may be made with Mrs. James Oliver.

Mrs. Florence Werner, Shavertown, and Mrs. Wesley Himmler, Dallas, are studying art with Marion Patterson at Hollywood, Florida. During the spring and summer, Mrs. Werner and Mrs. Himmler study with Mrs. Dorothy Barber, who teaches a group of women recruited from Wyoming Valley Woman’s Club.

Shavertown Bo, Paul R. Daily’s fifteen-inch Beagle, took first pace and a handsome gold trophy in the Tunkhannock Beagle Club field trials last week. Shavertown Bo, three years old, handled by Mr. Daily, has won several ribbons. Working in deep snow, the fifteen- inch Beagle raised his rabbit and checked in record time.

70 YEARS AGO – 1947

Installed just before the opening of the basketball season, an electrical board now flashes the score and reports the time during cage games in the Lehman gymnasium. A Medart, it is one of the best made, and was purchased at a cost of $225, which was drawn from the profits of the student magazine campaign carried on during previous school years. The score board carries a clock, the face of which is thirty inches in diameter and turns red during the closing minute of each quarter. The horn blows automatically for the end of quarters, and the red lights indicate the number of the quarter being played.

J. Archibald Brooks, East Dallas, has been appointed general chairman of the 1947 Red Cross Fund, Melvin Vivian, chairman of Wyoming Valley Chapter, announced yesterday.

Louie Weigand Ayre will present the following pupils in an Ensemble Recital Monday at the Trucksville Methodist Church: Carl Roberts, Donald Roberts, Nancy Roberts, Charlotte Perkins, Charles Perkins, Laura Perkins, Carol Bennett, Georgiena DeWitt, Harry Trebilcox, Betsy Reynolds, Margaret Ann Morgan, Richard Davis, Barbara Davis, Brenda Cleasby, Wilma Robbins, Mary Joan Williams, Ann Hall, Beverly Dixon, Ruby Dixon, Happy Mathers, Norma Carey, Elinor Downs, Barbara Dana, Louise Karm.
