The Wyoming Seminary Mock Trial Team recently competed in the fifth annual Benjamin Franklin Invitational Mock Trial competition in Philadelphia, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The Sem team finished in third place in the tournament, which featured the top 40 teams in the state.
Senior Emily Laurore, of Shavertown, received an Outstanding Attorney Award, while seniors Paige Allen, of Mountain Top, and Avery Conyngham, of Shavertown, received Outstanding Witness Awards.
In addition the team, divided into two groups, recently competed in the 13th Annual High School Mock Trial Tournament at the University of Pittsburgh, the largest such tournament in the state with about 50 teams in attendance. Sem’s Mock Trial A-Team finished in fifth place, while its B-Team posted a record of 2-2. Laurore received an Outstanding Attorney Award, and freshman Jillayne Gumbs of Allentown and junior Samantha Immidisetti of Somerset, N.J. received Outstanding Witness Awards.
At both tournaments, the Sem team advanced to the final round, falling in both cases to Roman Catholic High School from Philadelphia.
Team members are coached by teacher-coaches Adam Carlisle and David Johnson, and are advised by area attorneys Paul Galante, Joseph C. Ruby and Zach Watkins.
