KINGSTON TWP. — Operating hours for the Township Composting Site were unanimously approved by supervisors Wednesday.

Township residents will encounter new security measures at the Composting Site this spring and summer, including an attendant to monitor the facility, cameras and designated hours of operation.

The Composting Site, located next to the Public Works building, above Center Street Park on East Center Street in Shavertown, will be open for residents to dispose yard waste at the following times:

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the first three weekends in April;

• 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week from the last full week of April to the end of October; and

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the first two weekends in November.

The yard waste site hours and days are subject to change depending on weather events and needs, according to the motion.

Also, supervisors agreed to advertise job openings for two part-time Composting Site attendants. The positions will pay $10.25 an hour for a minimum of 25 hours per week.

Supervisors approved a motion, by a four-to-one vote, to purchase surveillance cameras for the Public Works building and Center Street Park at a cost not to exceed $10,000.

Supervisor Melissa Chamberlain voted against the motion, citing she did not like how it was worded.

“I don’t like the way they lumped them (the Public Works building and Center Street Park) together,” she said. “I don’t think cameras are needed inside the Public Works building. It is an expense not needed.”

In December, supervisors discussed the need to install added security measures, including security cameras at the Composting Site. At the December meeting, James Reino, supervisor chairman, said the township had issues with commercial haulers using the facility and problems with people stealing township materials such as modified stone stored on the site.

The next public work session of the Kingston Township supervisors is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 11. The next regular supervisors meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 13. Both will be in the municipal building.
