Alec Sampson, Steven Newell, Justin Hutchins and Xavier Barber posted first-period pins at four consecutive weight classes Tuesday to lead Dallas to a 45-30 victory over visiting Wyoming Valley West to take over the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 wrestling lead.

The Mountaineers were the first team to reach 3-0 in the six-match division schedule.

Kade Kravits also finished his 126-pound bout in the first period and Daniel Burkhardt added another pin at 285.

Liam Farrell (106), John Betzko (145) and Moustafa Almeky (195) won decisions.

Nanticoke 81

Jill O’Brien won two individual events and was part of the closing 400-yard relay win that allowed Lake-Lehman to pull out its first win of the WVC season, beating host Nanticoke.

O’Brien won the 200 individual medley, in her first competitive attempt at the event, and 100 backstroke.

Beth Bartuska (200 free) and Grace Ciaccia (100 free) each won an individual event and was part of the 400 freestyle relay.

Jess Ravert won the 100 breaststroke and Emily Burgit was the other winning relay member.

Nanticoke is in its first season as a combined team with Hanover Area in a cooperative sponsorship.

Andrew Herrick won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle and swam the leadoff leg in the winning 200 medley relay to help Lake-Lehman to a tie in the meeting between winless WVC teams.

Each team had just four swimmers.

Jake Selingo won the 100 freestyle and anchored the winning relay.

Thomas Manzoni and Tyler Manzoni were also part of the relay win.

Northwest 62

Lake-Lehman 52

Northwest scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to erase a fourth-point deficit and defeat Lake-Lehman in a WVC Division 2-3 crossover.

Brenna Babcock led Northwest with 21 points.

Madison Borum scored 16 points for Lake-Lehman. Sarah Salus added 11.

The Black Knights took a 38-34 lead after three quarters by outscoring the Rangers 18-8 in the third quarter.

Crestwood 54

Dallas 45

Crestwood overcame a five-point halftime deficit to hand Dallas its second straight loss to begin the WVC Division 1 season.

Lauren Charlton scored 12 points and Sara Lojewski had 10 for Dallas.

WRESTLING

Tunkhannock Kiwanis Tournament

Tunkhannock took a run at defending its own tournament title, sending four wrestlers to the finals before settling for third-place in the 26-team field.

Tommy Traver won a battle of state-ranked wrestlers and returning tournament champions for the Tigers’ only title at 132 pounds.

The sophomore improved to 15-0 with a 6-2 decision over Hanover Area’s Jeff Bennett.

Tunkhannock finished with 140 points. Wyalusing beat out the Wyoming Seminary B team for the title, 222 ½-188 ½.

David Evans (106), David Gavek (113) and Sam Rice (195) all finished second for the Tigers.

Josh Beeman was fifth at 126 and Jake Stephens was seventh at 182.

Buckskin Holiday Classic

Alec Sampson finished third at 152 pounds to lead Dallas in the two-day tournament at Conestoga Valley High School.

Dallas finished 14th and Lake-Lehman was 18th out of 26 teams in the tournament field.

Exeter defeated Central Mountain, 205-195, for the team championship.

Steven Newell (160) and Xavier Barber (170) each finished fourth for the Mountaineers.

Sampson went 4-1. He pinned Chase Gardner in 2:04 of the consolation final.

After a scoreless first period, Sampson turned Gardner once for three back points, then another time for the winning pin.

Newell and Barber each fell just short of third place. Newell dropped a 1-0 decision in the consolation final while Barber fell in overtime.

Newell had a pair of first-period pins. The only point allowed in the last match was on an escape by Mechanicsburg’s Brayden Willis in the second period. Willis was warned once for stalling in the third period but held on for the win.

Barber had a pin and technical fall. He lost, 5-3, on a takedown by Central Mountain’s Tanner Weaver in the first overtime period.

Lake-Lehman had five wrestlers finish in the top eight in their weight class.

Matt Galasso finished fourth at 126 pounds. He lost his first and lost bouts, but won five decisions in between.

R.J. Driscoll had a pair of pins on the way to a fifth-place finish at 132.

Jake Tomolonis was seventh at 152 while Bob Lipski and Kaleb Konigus were eighth at 145 and 285.

Lake-Lehman’s Cole Spencer had 23 points in the consolation game loss to Wallenpaupack and made the all-tournament team at the Honesdale Jaycees Tournament.

The host team pulled away from a one-point game at halftime for a win in the Bethlehem Freedom Holiday Shootout.

Joey Parsons had 15 points in the loss. Ben Donahue added 10.

Berwick 52

Maddie Kelley scored 24 points and earned Most Valuable Player honors when Dallas repeated its title in the Judy Knorr Tournament by defeating host Berwick.

Kendra Saba, who had three of the team’s eight 3-pointers, and Sara Lojewski added 11 points each.

Lojewski and Lauren Charlton joined Kelley on the all-tournament team.

Dallas had its perfect record spoiled in its fifth game of the season, but not without a fight.

The Mountaineers went two overtimes in the Bethlehem Freedom Holiday Shootout before falling.

Jay Bittner led Dallas with 22 points. Alex Charlton added 10.
