WILKES-BARRE — One bad inning.

Happened to the Lake-Lehman back when the weather was frigid against Holy Redeemer. Happened again Monday on the most pleasant day of the Wyoming Valley Conference softball season.

Redeemer again used a big inning — this time the fourth — to defeat the Black Knights 6-1 and run their WVC Division 3 winning streak to 68 games.

When the teams played back on April 10 in 36-degree temperatures, Redeemer (6-0 Div. 3) used a four-run seventh to take a 5-0 victory. On Monday, the Royals led 2-1 when RBI singles by lead-off hitter Morgan Bienkowski and second-hole hitter Allyson Lauivara in the fourth led to four runs and the final outcome.

Bienkowski also started the game with a home run to left field. Tiana Wren, who hits second, finished 2-for-2 with a double.

“They have three girls in a row (in the batting order) who are just top-notch players,” Lehman coach Nicole Chipego said. “Those girls are good for a hit every time.”

Redeemer was aided by three Lehman errors in the fourth. Grace Dacey, who bats eighth, also knocked in a run with a fielder’s choice. The six through nine hitters combined to go 2-of-9 at the plate, but scored all four runs in the inning.

“That’s what you have to do when you’re trying to figure this game out,” Redeemer coach Jerry Paulukonis said. “You have to put the ball in play and good things can happen eventually.”

Lehman (4-2 Div. 3) had just five hits all game off Bienkowski, who finished with 11 strikeouts. The Black Knights scored their only run in the fourth. Cassie Konopki reached on a single and an error on the play allowed her to reach second. After Konopki moved to third on a wild pitch, she scored on an infield single by Abbey Hogan.

Bienkowski has pitched nearly every inning this season after sharing duties the past few seasons with Kristen Coffay, who now pitches at Pitt-Johnstown.

“Softball is a more natural (pitching) motion,” Bienkowski said. “I find when I pitch more I get stronger as the game progresses. I play travel ball in the summer so pitch a lot. I’m definitely used to it.”
