DALLAS — When it comes to high school rivalries in the Wyoming Valley Conference, regardless of sport, Lake-Lehman and Dallas is one of the most intense whenever the two schools meet up, and anyone can win on any given day no matter the records.

In boys soccer however, the Mountaineers have had a stranglehold on the rivalry entering Monday night’s game, winning the Lt. Michael J. Cleary Trophy seven straight times and claiming nine straight regular-season victories against their Back Mountain rival. The last time the Black Knights won a big game against Dallas was in the 2012 District 2 Class 2A Tournament.

Now, Lake-Lehman can finally add another big win in the rivalry. The Black Knights got a late goal from Ian Dawsey to knock off Dallas 1-0 to receive the coveted Cleary Trophy for the first time in its eight-year history.

“I had a good feeling heading into this one,” Lake-Lehman coach Mike Kostrobala said. “This is the first year that I saw a confident bunch, not that we haven’t been in the past, but I felt that they were confident going into this game. I didn’t always get that. The last several years Dallas has had more talent than we have. But this year, we felt very confident going into this one.”

With less than 3 minutes to go in the game, Dawsey found a hole in between defenders after being set up by Nick Wnuk when Wnuk passed it, but it deflected off a Dallas defender. Dawsey picked it and took it nearly 40 yards to the goal before beating Dallas keeper Cory Metz for the goal with 2:09 left in the match. This came after the Black Knights moved to a two-forward formation from just one for about 20 minutes.

“The experience is unbelievable. My brother (Jay) played high school soccer and it’s something he was never able to do (beat Dallas),” Dawsey said. “I kinda feel like I just did it for him. I’m sure he’ll be proud of me and so will my family. I’m proud of my team. It’s a once in a lifetime experience to beat Dallas.”

For the 20 minutes before Dawsey’s goal it didn’t look like the Black Knights (6-0) were going to be able to pull out the victory. One of their players was hit with a red card with 25 minutes left leaving the team shorthanded for the rest of the game.

Right after the call, the Mountaineers (3-2-1) began getting a lot of pressure and a half dozen shots, but couldn’t finish the plays.

“When it happened I was concerned how we’d react. It’s not something you practice because it doesn’t happen very often,” Kostrobala said. “But the guys really seemed to buckle down defensively. For 20 minutes we were just chasing it down and quite frankly we were just trying to get it to overtime and then adjust and move back to two forwards.”

A lot of the credit goes to Lehman keeper Tommy Williams, who played the whole game. In other matches this season, Kostrobala was alternating keepers in each half with Tyler Manzoni. This time, he went with his gut and it worked out. Williams made 10 saves, many of them full extension.

One of the biggest saves the senior made came late in the first half on a breakaway by Nate Maransky. But Williams laid out, got a piece of it to knock the ball out of bounds. That save came after Dallas looked to be gaining momentum when it had a penalty kick opportunity that sailed high of the goal.

“It’s his senior year, Dallas game, I was trying to reward him being a senior, gut feeling kinda thing,” Kostrobala said. “I think he made three or four excellent saves.”

Lehman (6-0), which stayed unbeaten this season and hasn’t even trailed in a match all season, got off to a hot start with three quick shots 5 minutes into the game. All three were stopped by Metz, who collected nine saves overall on the night.

The first half was back-and-forth with each team getting chances and not being able to find the back of the net. In the second half, the intensity and the physical play picked up as it does in many rivalry contests.

“What a game,” Kostrobala said. “That was one of the better games I’ve seen in a while.”
