Major softball title part of fast start for Back Mountain Little League teams

Back Mountain teams are off to their usual fast start in Little League all-star tournament play.

Major (11-12) softball

Back Mountain became increasingly dominant each step of the way while winning four straight games and claiming the District 31 championship.

Morgan Sakulich hit a grand slam and Abby Jayne threw a two-hitter with three strikeouts when Back Mountain routed Harveys Lake, 15-0, in five innings in the championship game.

Kaci Hackenberg had a triple and double in the win. Summer Zier-Norris also had two hits.

Sisters Hanna and Hailey Kline had the hits for Harveys Lake.

Back Mountain made it through the six-team bracket by beating Harveys Lake, 7-3; Greater Wyoming Area, 12-1; and Back Mountain defeated Northwest, 14-1.

Harveys Lake fought back through the elimination bracket to earn a rematch with Back Mountain by beating Northwest, 14-11.

Hailey Kline had one of the team’s five triples along with a double. Krista Scoblick and Amber Kocher combined on a five-hitter and each had triples. Jillian Ulozos and Brooke Martin had the other triples.

Harveys Lake still needed two straight wins to claim the title, but Back Mountain ended it in one game.

Back Mountain will play District 16 champion Nanticoke in the Section 5 championship series July 5-9.

Major (11-12) softball

Back Mountain American won its first two games in Pool B and Back Mountain National its first game in Pool A.

Each team will have four games in pool play, which ends July 5. Semifinals are set for July 7 with the finals July 11 at Pittston Township.

BMA edged Northwest, 6-5, and shut out Swoyersville, 11-1, in four innings.

Nick Nocito went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI and struck out nine in four innings of pitching against Nortwest. Austin Finarelli struck out three in two innings for the win.

Finarelli threw a complete game and a three-run homer in the win over Swoyersville.

Bruce Chopyak had three doubles and scored each time. Logan Paczewski was 2-for-3 with a double.

BMN had a bye then beat Harveys Lake, 10-0, behind a combined no-hitter by Ty Federici and Will Youngman.

Federici also had a homer. Evan Zawadzki contributed a triple and single.

Harveys Lake had opened Pool A play with a 13-2 win over West Side.

Jacob McMillan had a homer and triple. Hunter Woods also had two hits.

Jeremy Scouton, Jeff Meadow and Corey Bean combined on a one-hitter.

9-10 baseball

Both Back Mountain teams won pool play openers on the 10-run rule in four innings.

Back Mountain American shut out West Side, 12-0, in Pool A while Back Mountain National defeated Northwest, 15-3, in Pool B.

Sam Barrouk went 3-for-3 with a triple and double to lead BMA.

Zach Paczewski struck out seven in the win.

Jay Peters and Jude Nocito each had a single and double.

Seth Berry, J.J. Rischawy and Connor Healy each had three hits in the BMN win.

Winning pitcher Sam Finarelli had two hits.

There are five teams in Pool B and four in Pool A.

Following pool play, the semifinals are July 8 and the finals are July 10 in Exeter.

10-11 baseball

Pool play was scheduled to open Saturday with Back Mountain American and Back Mountain National meeting.

There are games at Back Mountain Sunday, Wednesday and Friday when each team is part of a doubleheader.

Senior baseball

Back Mountain emerged from the winners’ bracket by defeating Greater Wyoming Area, 13-6, and Northwest, 8-6.
