Back Mountain church plans watch fire in honor of national POW/MIA day

For Dallas Post

KINGSTON TWP. — The Back Mountain Harvest Assembly will host a watch fire at the campus on Carverton Road Friday, Sept. 18 in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The event will be sponsored by the church’s Remembering Our Veterans Memorial Committee. The purpose of the watch fire is to remember and honor all the POW/MIA from U.S. wars and conflicts.

The community is invited to attend.

The lighting of the watch fire will take place around 5:30 p.m. on the BMHA Campus and burn until dawn. The official ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. This ceremony will consist of music, a time of prayer and other activities at the site. Representatives of various veterans’ organizations throughout the area will be in attendance. In the case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the worship center located in the church building.

Historically, watch fires were held on hilltops and at the mouths of rivers. These fires were used as a tool to guide those who were separated from their units during a battle find their way back to their commands.
