Dallas senior Regan Rome finished third out of 24 runners in the high school girls 3000-meter run at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia April 24.

Rome finished in 9:37.71 to place behind only Hannah DeBalsi from Westport, Conn. and Hannah Christen from Burke, Va. in a field featuring many of the top high school girls runners in North America.

DeBalsi won in 9:34.57 and Rome finished in the middle of three runners who were separated by just 24-hundredths of a second, placing behind Christen and ahead of Pottsville’s Paige Stoner.

Rome took 11 seconds off her time from last year.

Rome’s effort was one of many impressive performances by Back Mountain athletes in big meets with the high school postseason approaching.

Sophomore Dominic Hockenbury set a Lake-Lehman school record when he won the Class AA 3200-meter run by more than 26 seconds at the Shippensburg Invitational April 19 with a time of 9:22.61.

Dominic DeLuca from Dallas won the Class AAA 1600-meter run at the same event in 4:17.87, almost six seconds ahead of the pack.

DeLuca was a state cross country champion in the fall when Rome and Hockenbury were each finishing second.

The invitational was held at Shippensburg University, the site of the May 23-24 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Championships.

Dallas had the top two girls in the Class AAA 3200-meter run with sophomore Ally Rome (Regan’s sister) winning in 11:12.61 and Bryanna Dissinger taking second in 11:16.49.

Lake-Lehman’s Cayle Spencer was second in the Class AA girls javelin while freshman teammate Emily Johns was in the top six in the two other throwing events.

The Lake-Lehman girls are tied for first in Division 2 of the Wyoming Valley Conference heading into Tuesday’s home meet against Holy Redeemer.

The District 2 championships and a chance to qualify for the state championships are a week later at Scranton Memorial Stadium.

Dallas will compete in the Class AAA meet May 12, beginning at 3 p.m. Lake-Lehman is in Class AA, the next day at the same time.
