LEHMAN TWP. — Each Lake-Lehman goal was more spectacular than the last.

The Black Knights looked in playoff form in a 5-0 victory over Berwick Thursday in the Wyoming Valley Conference girls soccer regular season finale.

“This is the time of the year where everything is clicking and coming together,” Lake-Lehman coach Kelly Adamshick said. “Everybody is finally moving and pass the ball well together.”

Lake-Lehman will face Holy Redeemer Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Wyoming Seminary’s Nesbitt Stadium to decide the WVC Division 2 title. It is the first time the WVC will have a championship to settle a first-place tiebreaker since switching to the fall season in 2012. The winner will get the No. 2 seed in the district playoffs.

MacKenzie Love continued her torrid season with a hat trick and an assist for a seven-point effort. Love finishes as the WVC scoring champion with a league-high 39 goals and 90 points.

Fresh off of a Berwick chance on goal, Love took a fortuitous Amanda Ayers pass to the center of the box and finished it in the 16th minute for the first goal of the game.

“MacKenzie played great today,” Adamshick said. “She put the ball in the net when she had to. She is moving, working out. Teams are starting to put two, three girls on her, and she is still working hard and finishing.”

Lake-Lehman’s finishing was superb with a pair of one-timed goals. Ayers managed a three-point game in the first 16 minutes, scoring her goal when she redirected a Love pass off of the line for a 2-0 lead.

The Black Knights’ set-piece specialist Hallie Jenkins engineered a pair of masterful Lake-Lehman goals. In the 26th minute, she curled a 28-yard free kick into the corner of the net. She helped complete the scoring when she fed a long free kick to Love. Love toed it in the air for only goal of the second half and secure her hat trick.

“They do a really good job of overloading one side,” Berwick coach Paul DiPippa said. “And then they have a lot of speed. So if you can’t stop them from crossing balls than (Love) is going to kill you because she knows where to be. We couldn’t stop that. They’re a really good.”

Lake-Lehman’s defense held Berwick to four shots, securing its sixth consecutive and 12th overall clean sheet. Stephanie Ayers and Carlyn Blight each made one save. Lake-Lehman wraps the season with just five goals allowed and a 109 goal differential.

Freshman Emily Smith assisted Lake-Lehman’s fourth goal of the game in the 32nd minute. After a long pass propelled the Lake-Lehman attack, Smith backtracked her path and set up Love with a pass in the open lane.

Lake-Lehman also hit the post four times.

Berwick fought hard with the Black Knights and were even with shots on goal in the first 15 minutes. The Bulldogs had several open downfield looks at goal but were unable to secure the ball off bounces to get an attempt on target. Berwick keepers Jadyn Michael and Mady Hostetter combined for eight saves.

“We couldn’t finish,” DiPippa said. “We wanted to play balls diagonally. When we did that we got some opportunities but could not finish.”
